Body image is someone’s perspective on what their body looks like and what it should look like. This includes how they see themselves and how they compare themselves to the standards that society have set, these are called ‘society’s beauty standards.’ There are different ways that we see our body, both negative and positive.
When people think about body image and people dealing with self-criticism, they normally associate it with females but all genders of all ages deal with this very common mental and physical health issue.
To have a positive body image means that we feel comfortable in our body and what we look like, to have a positive body image also includes on how you feel about your appearance and the way that we judge our self-worth.
To have a negative body image means that we are overly cautious on what we look like in different cloths, comparing our size to the unrealistic sizes set by ‘society’s beauty standards’, to have negative body image also means to have a unhealthy way of talking to ourselves, putting ourselves down, and having a low self-esteem.
Adolescents and adults are in need for support with body image from a young age is important because studies and evidence shows that having a negative body image, low self-worth and body dissatisfaction play a key role in on growing conditions like eating orders, depressions and low self-estee
People with these conditions and negative body image are most likely going to focus on what their body looks like rather then what it does for them e.g. play sport.
